PSHE

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)

A Foundation for the Future

PSHE education is a vital part of our curriculum, designed to help children stay safe, healthy, and prepared for the modern world. At its core, PSHE develops the essential qualities pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members, and active participants in society. Guided by the National Curriculum, our approach ensures a broad and balanced education that nurtures the spiritual, moral, social, and physical growth of every child. By integrating compulsory Relationships and Health Education (RSE) and a deep understanding of fundamental British values, we equip our pupils with the tools to navigate the opportunities and responsibilities of later life.

Our Approach at Prendergast Primary

At Prendergast Primary, every child’s wellbeing is our priority. We weave PSHE into the fabric of school life, using every opportunity to build resilience by cultivating self-esteem and promoting both physical and mental health. We foster an environment of respect, encouraging healthy relationships and an appreciation for diversity to ensure a safe, welcoming space for all. Beyond the classroom, we inspire social responsibility through the discussion of global issues and develop essential life skills, such as financial literacy and career awareness, to help children make informed decisions for their future.

Living Our CARES Values

Our PSHE curriculum serves as the heartbeat of our school’s CARES values (Community, Ambition, Resilience, Effort, and Success). Rather than teaching these concepts in isolation, we live them through our daily interactions.

We strengthen our Community by emphasising a sense of belonging and empathy, while fueling Ambition by giving children the courage to aim high in every aspect of life. We help pupils identify their unique passions and see themselves as lifelong learners with limitless potential.  Mental wellbeing is a cornerstone of our teaching, allowing pupils to build the Resilience needed to manage emotions and "bounce back" from challenges. We celebrate the Effort involved in personal growth—whether mastering a social skill or understanding complex global issues—and define Success through the development of strong character and a healthy self-image.

To ensure a consistent "shared language" as children progress through the school, we have adopted the 1Decision scheme of work. This program provides a unified vision that meets all Government statutory requirements while enhancing our students' Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural (SMSC) development.
