Reading at Prendergast
Developing a love of books and reading is central to every child’s learning journey. At Prendergast Primary School, we create a rich reading environment that inspires children to enjoy and engage with a wide range of texts.
Children visit our school library each week, where their class teacher supports them in choosing books that match their interests. We further encourage reading through inviting book corners in every classroom, as well as a dedicated reading area and reading house in our outdoor learning environment.
As children’s reading develops, they gain access to our online reading platform, Collins Hub, and read books linked to our phonics programme, Little Wandle. Each child is carefully matched with books that reflect their current reading level. If your child is able to read their book with ease, please don’t worry—this is intentional. Re-reading familiar texts helps to build fluency, confidence, and a strong sense of achievement.
Children also take part in Little Wandle reading sessions three times a week. These sessions are designed to develop decoding skills, prosody (expression), and comprehension. The structured approach supports children in becoming confident, fluent readers, with the long-term goal of fostering a lifelong love of reading.
We recognise the important role that parents and carers play in supporting reading at home. At Prendergast, we offer phonics and reading workshops led by our Phonics Lead and English Lead. These sessions provide valuable insight into our approach and practical strategies to support your child’s reading development. Workshops are available for families in Reception and Year 1.
