PE and Sports Grant
PE and Sport Premium
At Prendergast Primary School, we use the PE and Sport Premium to provide high-quality physical education and to promote active, healthy lifestyles for all pupils. Our approach ensures that physical activity is inclusive, engaging and embedded across the school day, supporting both pupils’ wellbeing and their personal development.
We are committed to using this funding to create sustainable improvements by developing staff expertise, increasing participation, and broadening the range of opportunities available to all pupils.
Our Approach
Our provision is underpinned by three key priorities:
1. Increasing Daily Physical Activity
We continue to develop our OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme to ensure pupils are active throughout the day. This includes:
- Promoting active play in all weathers
- Introducing structured wet weather play opportunities
- Increasing engagement during break and lunchtime
This work supports a culture where physical activity is a normal and enjoyable part of everyday school life.
2. Broadening Sporting Opportunities
We provide a wide range of sporting opportunities through:
- Lunchtime and after-school clubs
- Specialist coaching
- Participation in local competitions and tournaments
Our strong partnership with local providers ensures pupils—including those with SEND and those new to sport—can access a diverse range of activities and experiences.
3. Improving Swimming Outcomes
We are committed to ensuring all pupils leave primary school able to swim confidently. To achieve this, we:
- Provide targeted support for non-swimmers and lower prior attainers
- Track progress carefully through regular assessment
- Offer additional swimming opportunities where needed
Impact of Our Provision
Our PE and sport provision has had a significant impact across the school:
- High participation rates across clubs, competitions and daily activity
- Inclusive engagement, particularly among girls and pupils with SEND
- Strong competitive success, including multiple borough-level tournament wins
- Increased engagement in active play, supported by the OPAL programme
- Positive pupil attitudes towards sport and physical activity
We know this through participation data, competition outcomes, pupil voice and staff observation.
How We Measure Impact
We evaluate the effectiveness of our PE and Sport Premium through:
- Participation rates in clubs and activities
- Pupil voice and engagement surveys
- Competition outcomes and achievements
- Swimming assessment data
- Observations of behaviour and activity levels during playtimes
This ensures that funding decisions are evidence-informed and responsive to pupil need.
Sustainability
We are committed to ensuring that improvements are long-lasting:
- Staff training builds internal expertise and reduces reliance on external providers
- OPAL and play policies embed active lifestyles into daily routines
- Ongoing assessment and review ensures funding is targeted effectively
This approach ensures that the impact of the funding extends beyond the current academic year.
Swimming and Water Safety
We report annually on the percentage of Year 6 pupils who can:
- Swim at least 25 metres
- Use a range of strokes effectively
- Perform safe self-rescue
Where needed, we provide additional support to ensure pupils meet national expectations.
