Modern Foreign Languages

Spanish

At Prendergast Primary School, Spanish is our Modern Foreign Language (MFL). Children in Key Stage 2 learn Spanish with Ms Fernandez, for whom Spanish is her mother-tongue. Spanish lessons begin in Key Stage 2, however, Key Stage 1 and Early Years children are taught basic vocabulary through songs and games. Children develop their speaking and listening skills and extend their knowledge of how language works.

Our MFL curriculum is designed around our school ethos and vision; stimulating and encouraging children’s curiosity about language and creativity through experimentation and engagement in the culture and values of Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries. As an inclusive community, our aim is for children to leave our school with high self-esteem and an appreciation for other cultures and customs.

Spanish is also the Modern Foreign Language taught in our Secondary phase at Key Stage 3. We work closely with our Secondary colleagues to support transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3, building a successful bridge in language learning
