New Reception Admissions for September 2019

Welcome to new and prospective Reception families

This is an extremely exciting time to join Prendergast Primary. We opened in September 2014 and now have children up to Year 4. By 2020 we will be at full capacity from Reception to Year 6. As the school has grown we have become increasingly popular with local families. Through word of mouth in the local community, our reputation as a caring, family school ‘at the heart of the community’ has grown, with excellent feedback from parents. Our school has been described as ‘a hidden gem’, with our 2016 Ofsted inspection praising our school for its ‘resourceful, rich environment inside and outside the classroom which inspires pupils to be creative in their play and learning.’

Creativity and a focus on the arts has become one of the strengths of our school – with teachers taking part in action research to develop creativity in our curriculum. We have highly specialist music, dance and drama teachers, giving our children the opportunity to access the arts from the very beginning of their school career. Reception children have performed as part of our choir at the Blackheath Halls, as well as taking part in Lewisham Live where our dance club took starring parts in ‘The Dance of the Cygnets’ from Swan Lake. All of our pupils take part in the Arts Award, a five- stage process which develops to a Level 3 qualification from when the pupils start in Reception to the time they move on to secondary school.

As a school, we also offer ‘wrap-around’ care from 7.30am to 6pm via Honeybees After School Club which is based on our site.

If you have any questions before you make your final school choices, please contact me at All applications should be made via the Lewisham Admissions webpage at:

Best Wishes

Head of School

Children born between 1st September 2014 and 31st August 2015 are due for entry to the Reception Class in September 2019. You must apply for a place through the local authority of the area in which you live (this may not necessarily be the same local authority as the school if you do not live in Lewisham).

National Offer Day is 16th April 2019.

You can arrange a visit to our school prior to applying, where our staff will be happy to greet you and tell you about the school and our Early Years provision.  You will be able to visit the Reception class, see the work currently being studied by our Reception children and speak with the Reception teachers.

However, please note that we have an intake of 30 students and our catchment area is very small. For academic year 2017-18, the furthest distance place we offered was 0.299km from the school.

Under the Schools Standard and Framework Act the Governing Board of the school has to make appeal arrangements for parents who wish to appeal against their child not receiving an offer of admission to the school.

The following process applies:

  • The deadline for lodging appeals is Tuesday 21 May 2019
  • The person from whom appeal forms are available is the Office and Admissions Manager
  • The person to whom completed appeal forms should be returned is the Clerk to the Independent Appeal Panel c/o the school
  • The deadline for hearing appeals is Wednesday 17 July 2019
  • Appellants will receive reasonable notice of their appeal hearing and other deadlines, such as deadlines for submitting additional evidence
  • Decision letters will be sent within reasonable period from the date of appeal.

Please contact our Reception or the Office Manager for an appeal form.

In-Year Admissions

If you are moving into the area or are interested in joining our school at any point other than the usual admission point into Reception then you will need to complete an in-year common application form.

Please put the following dates in your diary:

Tuesday 15th January 2019 - Applications for Reception places close (Lewisham LA recommend that online applications are made by 4th January).

Applications should be made via the Lewisham Admissions website:

Tuesday 16th April 2019 – National Offer Day

If you have been offered a place at Prendergast Primary School and would like to accept your offer, please do so via the Lewisham Council website. The deadline for accepting your place is Tuesday 30th April 2019. We require you to complete our induction documentation and return to us via email, post or in person by TBA. We will also need to see original copies of your child’s birth certificate, passport (if they have one) and a utility bill less than 3 months old.

Wednesday 24th April 9.15am and Thursday 2nd May 5pm – School Tours

If your child has been offered a place at Prendergast Primary and you have not already visited our school (or if you would like to visit again), this will be an opportunity for you to take a look at our facilities and meet some of our team. Please book your space on a tour with the school office on 020 8613 7490.

Tuesday 11th June and Thursday 13th June – Taster Sessions 9.30am – 10.30am

We will be inviting you and your child into school to experience a session in the Reception class and to meet the Reception class teachers. You will be advised which session your child will be invited to in due course.

Wednesday 19th June 5pm - Welcome to New Parents

This is an opportunity for parents to meet all of our staff team and to ask any outstanding questions that you may have. You will also be able to view Honeybees, our Breakfast and After School Club facility and to book your child in for September if you wish. This is a meeting for parents only where possible.

Summer Term - Music Workshops for New Pupils

During the Summer Term we will be inviting you and your child to visit school to take part in some fun Music sessions with Mrs Palliser our Arts co-ordinator.

Tuesday 2nd July 10.30am – 11.45am – Family Picnic

Our picnic has been a very popular family event over the last two years. We will be inviting our new children, siblings, parents/carers and grandparents to join the Reception team for a picnic in the school grounds. This is a great way of everyone getting to know each other.

Week Commencing Tuesday 3rd September - Home Visits

Your child’s class teacher will visit you and your child at home during this week. The purpose of this visit is for your child to get to know us better in their home environment and for the class teacher to find out a little bit more about their likes and dislikes, which will help them to settle quickly into school life.

Week Commencing 9th September - Reception Children Start School

Your child will start school one day during this week – you will be advised of the date nearer the time. Children attend school all day from 8.45am until 3.15pm from their very first day. All children will be full time at school by Friday 13th September.
